2023 Gambling Affiliate Survey Results
The gambling industry has relied on affiliates to drive traffic, conversions and profits since day 0. As regulation evolves and new players enter and leave the gambling space, we decided to find out what it’s like being a gambling affiliate in 2023, via the 2023 Gambling Affiliate Survey.
We surveyed a total of 500 affiliates in the online gambling industry with a selection of questions. The responses are summarized below:
Survey Results
Retroactive Changes to Terms and Conditions, Player Quotas
- 72% of affiliates reported experiencing retroactive changes to contracts that significantly affected their earnings.
- 58% of respondents indicated that new player quotas imposed by operators were unreasonably high and difficult to meet.
- 63% of affiliates expressed concerns about vague terms leading to arbitrary account terminations.
Changes in Cookie Duration
- 67% noted a reduction in cookie duration, negatively impacting their conversion tracking and earnings.
Promoting international / “offshore” gambling sites in the US
- 34% of affiliates operate 1 or more websites which promote offshore sportsbooks, casinos or poker in the United States.
- The main reasons for doing so were lack of trust with available operators (32%) and prohibitive pricing for affiliate licenses(36%).
Brand Cross-Selling Without Proper Attribution
- 76% reported instances where their referred players were encouraged to play at a partner casino without the players being tagged to the original referring affiliate.
Skimming
- 69% of affiliates suspected or had evidence of skimming, where their referred players were not attributed correctly to their accounts.
Re-tagging of Referred Players
- 55% experienced re-tagging issues, where their referred players were de-tagged or re-tagged, removing them from the affiliate’s account.
Overall Experience with Predatory Gambling Affiliate Programs
- 80% of affiliates stated that they had a negative experience with predatory gambling affiliate programs, citing a lack of transparency and unfair practices.

Purpose: To understand the challenges faced by affiliates in the online gambling industry.

Have you ever experienced retroactive changes to the terms and conditions of your affiliate partnership that negatively impacted your earnings?
2. New Player Quotas
Have you found the new player quotas set by your gambling affiliate program to be unreasonably high or difficult to achieve?
3. Arbitrary or Nebulous Terms
Has your affiliate account ever been threatened with termination due to not meeting vague criteria such as working “hard enough” as per the affiliate program’s standards?
4. Changes in Cookie Duration
Have you noticed any reduction in the cookie duration period set by your affiliate program, affecting your conversion tracking and commission?
5. Promotion of “Offshore” Gambling Sites
Do you promote international offshore casinos in the US?
If so, why do you do so instead of promoting regulated US operators?
6. Brand Cross-Selling Without Proper Attribution
Have you experienced instances where your referred players were targeted by the affiliate program’s partner USA casinos without proper attribution or tagging to your account?
7. Skimming
Do you suspect or have evidence that some of your referred players have not been properly attributed to your account (i.e., skimming)?
8. Re-tagging of Referred Players
Have you encountered issues with re-tagging, where your referred players were de-tagged or re-tagged, thereby removing them from your affiliate account?
