Legal Sports Betting In New Hampshire
New Hampshire lawmakers began the process of drafting sports betting legislation in 2019, almost a year after the Supreme Court ruled that the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) was unconstitutional. Governor Chris Sununu included revenue from sports betting in his budget for the year but the actual passing of legislation was a close thing. This was because some lawmakers wanted to tie sports betting legislation to their attempts to have casinos legalized within the state.
However, once the House agreed that the topics should be kept separate, HB 480 was signed into law in July 2019 with the state lottery operating as the industry regulator. A bidding process then began for the rights to become the state’s lone mobile sports betting operator. This was won by DraftKings who agreed to give the state 51% of its revenue from sports betting within the state.
As part of the agreement, DraftKings must open a minimum of 4 retail sportsbooks in the state.
The mobile sports betting industry launched on December 30th 2019 with two retail sportsbooks following in 2020.
The New Hampshire Lottery Commission governs and regulates all gaming activity in the state. This includes traditional lottery games, iLottery, Keno, sports betting, daily fantasy sports, charitable gaming, historic horse racing, and live horse and simulcast horse and dog racing.
