Legal Sports Betting in Vermont

2023 saw the introduction of a mobile only sports betting bill HB 127. The bill allows up to six mobile sportsbook operators to enter the market.

In May of 2023, Vermont Senators voted to approve HB 127 with no objections whatsoever after it was approved by three Senate committees. The bill was amended heavily with additional restrictions such as the banning of advertising on college campuses. The House of Representatives is expected to ratify the bill while Vermont Gov. Phil Scott then included Vermont sports betting revenue in his executive budget before signing the bill into law in June 2023.

The Department of Liquor and Lottery (DLL) is the assigned regulator for the sports betting industry and is responsible for the negotiation of contracts with sports betting operators.

In December of 2023, the DLL announced that mobile sports wagering would launch on in January and both DraftKings and FanDuel started taking bets on January 11th, 2024.

Vermont Sportsbook Bonuses

Various types of sportsbook bonuses are available in Vermont, although with only a few operators in the market, some bonuses may be offered for limited periods. Here are the most common sportsbook bonuses:

Deposit Bonus

A sportsbook matches a deposit by a specific percentage. For instance, a 100% deposit match bonus means a $100 deposit qualifies for an additional $100 in bonus credit. These bonuses often come with a maximum deposit match limit.

Reload Bonus

Similar to a deposit match bonus, this is exclusively for existing customers. When a deposit is made, the sportsbook matches it by a set percentage. However, the percentage for reload bonuses is usually lower compared to deposit match bonuses for new customers.

No Sweat Bet/2nd Chance Bet

While known by various names, this bonus is simple and straightforward wager insurance. If the bet loses, the sportsbook refunds the stake up to a set maximum amount. The refund is provided in site credit, which can be used for another wager.

Free Bets

This type of offer typically provides a “free bet” for a fixed amount. Free bets often have a minimum odds threshold and may be limited to a specific sporting event or sport. However, these offers can be misleading, requiring consumers to wager their own money to claim the supposedly “free” bets.

Cashback

Sportsbook cashback promotions refund customers a percentage of their losses. Cashback is based on losses incurred during a specified period, such as a week. Cashback bonuses are issued in site credit.

Sportsbook Loyalty Programs

Vermont sportsbooks operate loyalty programs where bettors are rewarded for their spending on the platform. These loyalty programs are usually points-based tiered systems, with points awarded for each dollar wagered. Accumulating more points allows customers to move up the tiers, granting access to higher-value rewards.

Popular Sports to Bet on in Vermont

There are no major league professional sports teams in Vermont. This means that local sports fans look to neighboring states for their ‘local’ teams. Needless to say teams from Massachusetts are very popular at local sportsbooks.

NFL

Vermont sports bettors often favor the New England Patriots in the NFL as this is the nearest NFL team to the Green Mountain State. The Patriots share the record for the most Super Bowl victories with the Pittsburgh Steelers. They clinched titles in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2015, 2017, and 2019, while also making appearances in Super Bowl games in 1986, 1997, 2008, 2012, and 2018, albeit ending in defeat.

NBA

The Massachusetts-based Boston Celtics have a pretty large fanbase in Vermont. As one of the NBA’s founding eight teams, they have won 17 NBA Championships from 1957 to 2008. Notably, in March 2024, they achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first NBA team to win three games by over 50 points in a single season.

MLB

Another Massachusetts-based franchise, the Boston Red Sox, is by far the most popular MLB team in the state. With a remarkable legacy, the Red Sox have clinched nine World Series Championships, winning in 1903, 1912, 1915, 1916, 1918, 2004, 2007, 2013, and 2018.

Vermont College Sports Betting

While college sports betting is permitted, betting on local state-based teams is not. Vermont doesn’t quite have the strong history in college sports as other states. In fact, while the University of Vermont boasts 6 NCAA Championship titles, all of those were in skiing.  When it comes to basketball, the Vermont Catamounts has nine NCAA Tournament appearances and one victory in 2005 to reach the Round of 32.

esports Betting in Vermont

Vermont’s legislation allows for esports betting but at present, there are no sportsbooks that offer esports markets. This could change in the near future given that several colleges in the state run esports programs.

Horse Race Wagering in Vermont

There has been no live horse racing in Vermont since the 1970s. While pari-mutuel wagering is legal, there are no off-track-betting (OTB) facilities in the state and no simulcast betting.

Daily Fantasy Sports in Vermont

In 2017, Vermont passed legislation that allowed Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) operators to launch in the state. S 136 was required after former Attorney General William Sorrell‘s office stated that DFS contests were in breach of the state’s gaming laws and therefore operators could be fined. The bill was quickly introduced and passed without a hitch allowing major operators such as FanDuel, DraftKings, and Yahoo! to enter the market.

What About Online Poker in Vermont?

With most forms of gambling considered illegal, there is no live or online poker scene in Vermont. It’s also extremely unlikely that lawmakers will introduce legislation for online casino gaming or poker since there are no commercial or tribal casinos in the state. However, should sports betting become legal it may open the floodgates for gaming expansion in Vermont.

Responsible Gambling Resources in Vermont

The Department of Liquor and Lottery (DLL) ensures that the state’s licensed gambling operators encourage safe and responsible gambling activity among their customers.

The state also operates several responsible gambling initiatives including a self-exclusion list managed by the DLL.
