Montana Sports Betting

In May 2019, just a year after the Supreme Court ruled that the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) was unconstitutional, Governor Steve Bullock signed HB 725 into law. This gave the state lottery control of sports betting with no provisions for third party mobile sports betting apps or the issuance of sports betting licenses to external operators.

At the same time that Bullock signed this piece of legislation into law, he vetoed SB 330 that would have allowed taverns and bars to apply for licenses to run their own sportsbooks.

Who regulates the Montana sports betting industry?

The Montana sports betting industry is regulated by the state-run Montana Lottery. The Lottery under the name Sports Bet Montana is the state’s sole sports betting operator and it’s highly unlikely that this will change in the near future.

Which legal sportsbooks are available in Montana?

As mentioned earlier, the Montana Lottery is the state’s only sports betting operator. Sports betting kiosks can be found at any of the state’s licensed lottery retailers that also possess a liquor license.

There are over 400+ retail locations dotted throughout the state. The full list of sports betting locations can be found here on the Sports Bet Montana website. The list is expected to grow as more betting kiosks are installed at licensed retailers.

Sports betting apps in Montana

Mobile sports betting is technically legal in Montana. However, Montana is one of the few states that requires a gambler to be physically located in a retail sportsbook in order to place bets online.

The only mobile sports betting option is the Sports Bet Montana website and app. The app is available for both Android and iOS devices while the website can be accessed from any browser.

Customers can create an account, add or withdraw funds, and create betting slips from anywhere in the state. But to place those bets, they must be located in a physical sports betting retailer.

The only real benefit to having the app is that gamblers can prepare their bets before arriving at the sportsbook and place bets when seated. While the website and app boast the features you’d expect from a mobile betting app, the on-property betting requirement means that this isn’t a truly mobile betting option.

Daily Fantasy Sports in Montana

Montana is one of the few states that specifically highlights online fantasy sports contests as an illegal gambling activity. This means that none of the major DFS operators offer real money contests in the state.

State legislators have made moves in the past to relax DFS restrictions but none have been successful. Following the creation of a state-run sports betting monopoly, it seems highly unlikely that lawmakers would allow DFS operators to enter Montana. In a nutshell, DFS contests are unlikely to be legalized in Montana.

What about online poker in Montana?

It should come as no surprise that a state with such specific laws to prohibit DFS contests has no regulated online poker market. In fact, with such a small population, lawmakers might feel that online casino and poker legislation simply wouldn’t be worth it as the tax revenue return would be minimal at best.

At this point a regulated online poker market in Montana is highly doubtful.
