The US Department of Interior (DoI) has moved quickly to approve a new tribal-state gaming compact that will allow Arizona’s tribal casinos to offer legal sports betting services. The federal approval means that sports betting is now legal in the state and could be live just in time for the NFL season.
Governor Doug Ducey signed the new compact with tribal leaders on April 15th. However, the DoI hadn’t been expected to deal look at the compact much less approve it quite so soon.
Following the announcemnt, state Rep. Jeff Weninger, who sponsored the bill said :
“This means that our aspirational goal of having sports betting live by the start of the NFL season is even more realistic now.”
He added:
“We are confident by the end of August or early September they can be live”
Aside from tribal casinos, professional sports teams have also been given the green light to launch their own sports betting products with two teams already agreeing gambling partnerships. The Arizona Diamondbacks have partnered with Caesars Entertainment while the Phoenix Suns have teamed up with FanDuel.
The PGA Tour have also revealed plans to open a sportsbook at TPC Scottsdale in partnership with DraftKings.
