The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has announced that it has requested that local internet service providers (ISPs) block access to a number of illegal online gambling websites as it looks to eliminate unlicensed gambling operators from the Australian market.

According to the ACMA announcement Crown Pokies and Play AUD were among websites found to be in breach of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001.

Although the regulator does not name all sites blocked in this latest action, it does note that a further twenty illegal websites have been added to the list of gambling sites blocked by the ACMA since November 2019. This brings the new total to 823. According to the ACMA’s records, around 210 unlicensed gambling businesses have also withdrawn from the Australian market since 2017.

The ACMA’s announcement of its latest blocks follows this week’s launch of BetStop, Australia’s first nation-wide self exclusion program for gamblers. The program allows Australians to self exclude from all licensed online and telephone-based gambling services throughout Australia.
