The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has requested that all local internet service providers (ISPs) block four newly identified unlicensed gambling websites.
The four websites were found to have been operating in Australia in a direct breach of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001.
The websites identified for blocking are:
- Firefox Casino
- Shazam Casino
- Rich Prize
- Heaps O Wins
This brings the total number of illegal gambling and affiliate websites blocked by the ACMA to 723. The ACMA first began taking action against operators in 2017 and started blocking websites in November of 2019. Since 2017, over 200 unlicensed gambling websites have also been withdrawn from the Australian market.
A full list of all blocked gambling websites is available on the ACMA website.
Streaming service Kayo warned over gambling adverts
The ACMA has also announced that following an investigation, it has found that sports streaming service Kayo breached Australian advertising rules in relation to gambling services and products. The investigation centered on ads that were shown during the May 2022 Fremantle vs. Collingwood AFL match.
According to local gambling regulations, streaming services are not permitted to show gambling ads during live events between the hours of 5am to 8.30pm. Kayo aired gambling ads during scheduled breaks in the match.
Speaking of the investigation, ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin said:
“Streaming services need to comply with the rules in the same way traditional television broadcasters do. Gambling advertising during live sport is a major concern for Australians. Families want to watch live sport without needing to worry that children may come to think of gambling as a part of the game.”
As a result of the investigation Kayo has implemented new processes that will ensure this does not happen again. Due to the company’s willingness to assist with the investigation and the speed with which it implemented required changes to its processes, the ACMA has issued a formal warning but no financial penalty.
