The Australian federal government has proposed changes to their National Classification Scheme in a bid to crack down on gambling in video games.
In a press release, the government stated that it proposed applying an R18+ rating to any game that included games that mimicked gambling of any kind. The proposal also suggests an ‘M’ (over 15s) for any video games that contain loot boxes. This could change the rating for many G-rated games that are currently played by children in Australia.
In the release the government stated:
These stronger measures, which are an immediate priority for the Government, will help to protect those most vulnerable in our community from gambling harms, and signal that such games are not appropriate for children.
The release also notes that studies have shown a link between loot boxes, simulated gambling in video games and the early signs of problem gambling.
Speaking of the new proposals Minister for Communications, the Hon Michelle Rowland MP said:
“The Stevens Review, which the Government has today released, reveals a Scheme in need of significant change. That is why I have asked my department to also consider options for more comprehensive reform, including recommendations from the Stevens Review and other previous reviews and prior work on these issues, recent research, and industry and community feedback.
The changes we are proposing today will help set the Scheme on the right path forward and I look forward to hearing from the community, industry, and my counterparts in state and territory government to ensure we deliver a system that reflects modern Australia.”
The proposal comes at federal level which means that individual states and territories will need to agree before it can be implemented nationwide.
The government announcement follows an inquiry launched last year into loot boxes and live sports betting and their effects on both minors and problem gamblers.
