Liquor & Gaming NSW (L&GNSW) has published details of its latest financial penalty issued last week to IRPSX PTY LTD, trading as Bet Right.
The company was found to have offered illegal boosted odds and was brought to court following an investigation. At a hearing of Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court on August 7th, Bet Right was fined AU$20,000 ($12,798/€11,771). The company was found not guilty of three separate charges.
In its announcement, L&GNSW also revealed that it has issued over AU$1.1 million ($703,905/€647,411) in fines to sports betting operators since 2016.
The fines included AU$830,000 ($531,208/€488,561) in penalties issued to companies that were prosecuted in court and AU$270,000 ($172,803/€158,934) in infringement penalties issued directly to gambling operators.
L&GNSW Executive Director Regulatory Operations, Jane Lin said of the regulator’s actions:
“L&GNSW has actively engaged with online bookmakers and provided guidance on their compliance obligations, so there is simply no excuse for wagering companies to advertise inducements and they can be assured that the risk of being caught and prosecuted is extremely high.
In April, we issued 14 penalty infringement notices totaling $210,000 to wagering company, Betr, which represents the largest ever fine issued to a wagering operator for offering inducements in NSW history.
We will continue to monitor television, print and social media for this illegal advertising and advocate for the courts to issue higher penalties.”
In March of 2023, SportsChamps was fined AU$40,000 ($25,600/€23,545) and ordered to pay additional legal costs of AU$14,000 ($8,960/€8,241). This was the third time that SportChamps had been prosecuted. The company was AU$2000 in 2018 and AU$2500 in 2019.
In 2021, Sportsbet, the biggest online wagering company in Australia, faced two convictions for violations related to gambling advertising. As a result of these breaches, the company was fined $135,000 ($86,000/€79,400) and $22,000 ($14,00/€12,900), respectively.
So far in 2023, gambling regulators across the globe have issued a total of £309,982,609 in fines and penalties.
