The Canadian Senate has passed Bill C-218 that will allow sports fans in Canada to bet on single sporting events following a second reading on Tuesday May 25th.

The bill’s author, conservative MP Kevin Waugh had previously stated that the bill had a 50/50 chance of progression, but in a surprising move the senate passed the bill advancing it to the Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce.

Bill C-218 was passed by the House of Commons in April following a third reading and has been waiting for senate approval since.

Now that it has been referred to the committee, the legislation will be reviewed once more and if approved will then receive Royal Assent before becoming law.
