The Mohegan Sun Casino has opened at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas to become the first tribal casino in Las Vegas.

The new casino is located in the former Hard Rock Casino acquired by the Virgin group in 2018. In a decision that surprised many, Virgin decided that it would only manage the hotel side of the business and find a partner to run the casino.

In September 2019, Virgin owner Richard Branson announced that the Connecticut-based Mohegan Tribe would run the casino. The tribe received its gaming license from the Nevada Gaming Commission last October paving the way for this week’s grand opening.

The casino features 650 slot machines and nearly 60 table games across a 60,000-square-foot gaming area with a Betfred sportsbook planned for the near future.

The grand opening ceremony saw actor and TV host Mario Lopez of Saved by the Bell and Access Hollywood fame throw the ceremonial first dice roll at the craps table.
