The Belgian Gambling Commission, Kansspelcommissie – Commission des jeux de hasard (CJH), has issued advice to players and gambling operators following a Royal Decree that will set new limits for online gambling deposits.
Deposit limits to drop from €500 to €200 per week

According to the CJH, the Royal Decree has set a new mandatory deposit limit of €200 per week on all accounts at online betting sites. The current limit of €500 per week will stay in place until the new limit comes into effect on October 20th, 2022.

The new limit is applicable to customer accounts at individual gambling websites. This means that each account a person holds at separate gambling websites will have a €200 per week deposit limit. The seven-day period is treated as a moving window that begins on the day that the player makes their first deposit. The limit will then reset every seven days.

The CJH has also revealed that the deposit limit can be increased at the request of the customer. However, any increase in limits must first be approved by the CJH following a credit/affordability check carried out through the National Bank of Belgium. It also notes that if a player who has been approved for a deposit limit increase defaults on any payments on personal loans or credits cards as reported by the National Bank, that player’s limit will be automatically reduced to the standard €200 per week.

This is sure to result in gamblers moving their casino & gambling action to international or “offshore” gambling sites. Professional online poker players will be especially hard hit by these measures – with many facing the tough decision whether to move abroad in order to keep earning their living from online gambling
