The Dutch Gambling Regulator, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), has announced that it will launch an investigation into the activities of 25 gambling websites that are not licensed to operate in the Netherlands.
Following a change to online gambling legislation which took effect on November 1st, several major online operators have already left the Dutch market. However, the regulator has noted that certain websites have failed to remove their services from the local market and will now face an investigation.
If the websites in question have been found to have breached Dutch gambling laws, they will be the first to be subject to the new harsher penalties and fines that came into effect on November 1st.
While the new gambling laws allow licensed operators to offer games of chance online since October 1st, they must still follow specific rules and regulations regarding their activities. And according to Kansspelautoriteit many have failed to do so.
In a statement, Kansspelautoriteit said:
“At legal providers, participants in games of chance can play in a safe environment, in which there is a reliable game and sufficient attention for gambling addiction. An objective of the law is to ‘channel’ players from illegal to legal providers.
If the KSA finds that the 25 selected websites can be played from the Netherlands, the KSA will take enforcement action.”
The announcement revealed that any operators that illegally offer services to the Dutch market will face sanctions. This also includes affiliates or any entity involved in the promotion of said services in the Netherlands.
