Dutch Gambling Regulator Opens Applications for Netherlands’ Only Horse Race Betting License

De Kansspelautoriteit, Netherlands’ gambling regulator has announced that it has opened the application process for the reissuance of the country’s only legal horse race betting license.

Horse race betting in the Netherlands is a legal monopoly with one operator issued a specialised totaliser license. The current license has been held by ZEbetting & Gaming Nederland BV since 1998 and is due to expire on the 30th June 2022.

According to the press release issued by De Kansspelautoriteit, the winning bidder will hold an exclusive horse race betting license covering the period from the 1st of July 2022 to the 30th June 2027.

The regulator will receive applications up until the 30th of November 2021 at which point all applicants will be vetted by De Kansspelautoriteit. Applications will proceed based on an operator’s suitability as well as othe rfactors such as its location, internal supervision processes, reliability, integrity policy, and experience with offline retail betting.

Suitable operators will move onto the second stage which involves a drawing of lots to determine the winning bidder. All applications are subject to a €32,000 application fee with no refund for unsuccessful applicants.

It’s not yet clear which operators will bid for the license.
