The Irish Government will meet today to approve the publication of the Gambling Regulation Bill and to discuss plans for the establishment of a gambling regulator.
Cabinet ministers will look at proposals to establish The Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland which will oversee advertising, gambling websites and apps, and the regulation of the gambling industry in general.
The new legislation, which was proposed by Minister of State James Browne, will provide an improved and up-to-date approach to licensing and gambling regulation in Ireland similar the approach taken in many other countries with legal gambling industries.
It’s believed that the new regulator will focus heavily on public safety and the dangers and effects of problem gambling. Earlier this year, Anne Marie Caulfield was named as the new CEO of the regulatory authority. However, until the publication of the bill is approved, the proposed regulator has no official authority.
Cabinet ministers are expected to approve the bill today and the regulator will commence operations some time in early 2023.
Today’s expected approval brings to an end and long journey towards modernized gambling regulation in Ireland that began as far back as 2013.
