Kansas State Governor, Laura Kelly is expected to sign a sports betting bill into law sometime this week.
Sports betting bill next on Governor’s agenda
According to reports in local press, when asked by the Kansas Capitol Bureau when she will sign SB 84 into law, Gov. Kelly said:
“I think some time this week…so stay tuned.”
However, she also added that:
“I never say whether I’m going to sign it, until I’ve actually seen it, but I expect that I’m going to get that bill this week.”
Earlier this year on April 29th, lawmakers in the state approved legislation that would allow for legal sports betting in Kansas following a special overnight session in the house. The bill was passed by a vote of 21 to 13.
The bill will allow both retail sports betting at Kansas state casinos and mobile sports betting from anywhere within the state.
It’s believed that a regulated sports betting market in Kansas could generate from $6 million to $10 million in state taxes while supporters are hopeful that the establishment of the market could help lure a professional sports team to the state. Kansas currently has no major league pro sports teams as the Kansas City teams including the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals are based in neighboring Missouri.
Once the bill is signed into law, sports betting in Kansas is expected to launch at some point in late 2022 or early 2023.
