Poland’s largest bookmaker, STS Gaming Group, has launched legal action against Kindred Group and its sports betting brand Unibet for allegedly violating Polish law.
The lawsuit alleges that Unibet is in breach of local gambling laws by actively targeting customers in Poland. This has been carried out by Unibet without the required regulator-issued license.
According to the legal documents, STS asserts that Unibet has provided games without permission from the Ministry of Finance and carried out ‘many years of illegal activity’ including promotions and advertising that specifically targeted Polish consumers. This also allegedly included a Polish language website which has since been changed to a different domain to avoid detection. STS states that this sites has appeared in the country’s blocklist under different names on 159 occasions.
Should the courts rule that Unibet has breached the Polish Gambling Act, Kindred could face the maximum financial penalty of as much as PLN 28.9 million (€6 million).
Reports also suggest that other Polish gambling license holders are considering joint legal action against Kindred for its activity in the market.
A Warsaw District Court has since warned Kindred and Unibet that it cannot continue to offer betting or advertise its products in Poland while the case is ongoing.
