The Netherlands gaming authority, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), has released its 2023 Gambling Market Scan, showing detailed information for 2022, the first full year of legal online gambling in the local market.
Casino gaming the most popular form of gambling
Overall gross gambling revenues for the year came to €3.4 billion. This was an increase of €1.4 billion on the previous year but it has been noted that closures due to the global pandemic had affected the previous year’s totals.
Online Casinos Driving Growth
According to the report, there has been a clear shift from physical casino gambling to online betting as the online industry accounted for 31% of all market revenue for the year. Casino games, both land-based and online, generated €1.9 billion in revenue throughout the year, up from the €1.5 billion reported in 2019 prior to the pandemic. This growth was primarily driven by online casino gaming as revenues for the land-based industry actually fell by 30% when compared to 2019.
However, the report notes that retail casino revenues may increase further across 2023 as the industry slowly recovers from the forced closures of the previous two years.
Market Share by Sector
Casino gaming was by far the most popular form of gambling in 2022 with a 56% market share. Of this figure 33% was through land-based casinos while 23% came through online casinos.
Lottery gaming made up a smaller share of the market (34% in 2022 compared to 57% in 2021) than in previous years. However, the lottery industry showed marginal growth.
Sports betting holds the smallest market share of 9% in 2022 (2% land-based, 8% online), up from 4% in the previous year. Despite a relatively small market share, the industry enjoyed significant growth with revenues of €319 million, up 262.5% on the previous year’s total of €88 million.
Customer Spend
The report notes that the Dutch spend on average 14% less than customers in other European countries. In 2022, Dutch people spent an average of €258 on games of chance at licensed providers. In 2021 this was €158 and in 2019 the figure was €221. A higher percentage of gambling spend is attributed to land-based gambling, however, no exact figures were listed in the report.
According to a report published earlier this month, approximately 417,000 people gamble online each month with around 826,000 active customer accounts now registered with online gambling providers.
