The North Carolina House of Representatives’ Commerce Committee has given its approval to a bill that would legalize mobile sports betting in the state.
HB 347 proposes an expansion of the current gambling market to allow for mobile sports betting. As it stands, retail sportsbooks are the only form of legal sports betting in North Carolina.
The committee voted 17-10 in favor of the bill which also makes provisions for the introduction of retail sports betting outlets near sports stadiums, arenas, and racetracks. The bill also proposes that temporary sportsbooks be allowed to open whenever a major sporting tournament is taking place. This would include pop-up sportsbooks at major golf tournaments such as the US Open which is set to take place at Pinehurst Resort in 2024.
Included in the bill is a proposed tax rate of 14% for all online sports betting operations. This revenue would be directed towards sporting programs in the state along with problem gambling support programs.
The bill has now been referred to the House Committee on Finance ahead of any potential vote by representatives.
