A spokesperson for online bank Revolut has revealed that it will block all credit card payments to gambling websites in Ireland.
Revolut, alongside Apple Pay, and Google Pay, is one of Ireland’s most-used payment service providers with many local gamblers using the app to transfer funds to their accounts at bookmakers and online casinos.
However, following the Irish government’s move to ban all credit card payments to gambling websites, an investigation by the Irish Independent has revealed that gamblers have circumvented this restriction by first transferring funds from their credit cards to Revolut and then making deposits into their online betting accounts.
Speaking to the Irish Independent, a Revolut spokesperson confirmed the move saying:
“Revolut is planning to block the use of credit card funds on gambling sites in Ireland, in the same way that we do in the UK. This is in addition to the 48-hour gambling block that all users can currently activate themselves.”
Revolut currently has 1.5 million users in Ireland, almost 30% of the country’s population. Users are currently allowed to find their accounts by credit card, debit card, or bank transfers. The company has previously developed technology that allows it to identify payments that have come via credit cards and prohibit them from going to any form of gambling website. This is already in use in the UK.
The spokesperson did not reveal when the ban would come into force.
