The Swedish Gaming Authority, Spelinspektionen, has issued a fine and warning to iGaming developer Yggdrasil Gaming for providing software to an unlicensed gambling website operating in Sweden.
According to the regulator’s announcement, all licensed software providers in Sweden were sent a letter in October of 2023 reminding them of their obligations to ensure that they only provide games software to licensed gambling operators. However, a random inspection of several websites in January 2024 found the Yggdrasil was a supplier of one illegal casino site which had been ordered to withdraw from the Swedish market.
When informed of the issue, the company terminated its agreement with the unlicensed website immediately. In its response to the charge, Yggdrasil claimed that there was a breach of contract on the part of the unlicensed gambling operator while also stating that Spelinspektionen’s internal auditing process was flawed.
The regulator refuted those claims and found that the breach was a serious one. As a result, Spelinspektionen issued a warning to Yggdrasil along with a penalty fee of SEK 300,000 (€26,220/$28,370).
This brings the total fines issued so far in 2024 to €35.1 million / $37.9 million.
