According to data released by the Swedish gambling regulator, Spelinspektionen, licensed gambling companies reported a turnover of SEK 27.4 billion (€2.4 billion) in 2022.
Gambling turnover grew by 5.1% year-on-year
The report also reveals that the online gaming and betting industry grew by just over 6%. The majority of the growth came through privately owned online gambling companies as state lottery and slot machines revenue remained largely unchanged from the previous reporting period.
However, the regulator notes that during the previous year, many gambling businesses were heavily affected by the global pandemic. This included land-based businesses facing temporary closures while the government also introduced responsible gambling limitations during lockdowns that impacted online revenue figures.
Reporting for the fourth quarter of 2022 reveals that turnover for the industry was SEK 7.2 billion (€634 million) representing a 3.2% increase when compared to the same period in 2021.
By the end of Q4 2022, around 85,000 people had been prohibited from gambling through the self-exclusion program Spelpaus.se, marking a 5% increase from the previous quarter.
The report also gives a breakdown of all gambling licenses active at the end of the quarter:
- 60 Commercial Online Gaming
- 48 Betting
- 16 Land Based Casino Game
- 5 Land Based Merchandise Game
- 3 Land Based Card Game
- 2 Ship International Traffic
- 1 State Casino
- 1 State Lottery
- 1 Value Slot Game
The regulator notes that the latest figures are preliminary and are based on data received from the Swedish Tax Agency.
