The California Republican Party (CAGOP) has announced its position on several key ballot initiatives ahead of the November election and confirmed its opposition to all forms of legal sports betting in California.
According to a press release issued through the official GACOP website, the party confirmed that delegates voted to adopt the Report put forward the Party’s Initiatives Committee. The report recommended positions on four ballot measures while the party took a position on three additional measures that had previously been discussed at the CAGOP 2022 convention earlier in April of this year.
The CAGOP will oppose proposition 26 which would allow in-person sports wagering at tribal casinos and privately-owned race tracks. The proposition will also allow additional gambling activities at tribal casinos including in-person roulette and dice games. Unsurprisingly, tribal leaders and race track owners are the main supporters of this proposition.
The party will also oppose proposition 27 which would allow mobile sports betting operators to launch within the Golden State and allow local gamblers to place wagers outside of tribal lands. Proposition 27 has caused some controversy within the state as it is supported by out-of-state companies. Negative comments from state legislators and tribal leaders has resulted in as many as 58% of polled Californians stating that they would vote against the proposition in the November ballot.
Speaking of the positions taken, CAGOP Chairperson Jessica Millan Patterson said:
“In 2020, voters were with the California Republican Party on seven of the 11 ballot initiatives in which we took a position. Voters are with Republicans on the ideas, and with our final ballot initiative positions now in place, we are ready to put in the work to ensure that voters are with us again this November. From now until polls close, we will be talking to voters about these important initiatives, about our top-notch slate of Republican candidates, and about what’s at stake in this election following years of Democrats’ failed one-party rule in California.”
