Google Opens the Door for Paid Sports Betting Ads in New York State

Google Ads now allows certified and state-licensed sports betting operators to run ads for mobile sportsbooks in New York State.

Ads were previously prohibited according to state law, but since the New York State Gaming Commission has relaxed restrictions, Google has since made the decision to allow ads promoting online sportsbooks.

In announcement, Google stated:

In January 2022, the Google Ads Gambling and games policy United States country-specifics will be updated. We will begin to accept and run ads for sports betting from certified, state-licensed entities in New York from January 8.

Advertisers must apply for certification. Application for certification will be open to advertisers who wish to promote online gambling content in this region on January 7, 2022.

The Gambling and games policy page will be updated when the policy goes into effect.

New York mobile sports betting was approved in April of 2021 when it was included in the state budget. They license application process started in late summer before operators were approved to launch sports betting apps in the state.

The approved operators are:

  • DraftKings
  • FanDuel
  • BetMGM
  • BallyBet
  • PointsBet
  • Caesars
  • Wynn
  • Kambi/BetRivers/SugarHouse
  • Resorts World

Four of these operators were approved for launch on Saturday 8th January 2022. These were DraftKings, FanDuel, Caesars, BetRivers.
