The latest monthly revenue report from the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission (IRGC) reveals that licensed sportsbooks accepted $229.9 million in wagers throughout the month of December.
The latest figures represent a drop of 7% in wagering activity from the previous month’s sports betting handle of $247.4 million.
Online sports wagers accounted for almost 90% of all sports betting activity during the final month of 2022 as mobile sports betting apps accepted over $206.9 million in wagers. Meanwhile, the state’s retail sportsbooks took in just over $23 million in wagers, down 3.7% on the previous month.
Payouts through online sportsbooks amounted to $189.2 million while retail payouts came to $19.9 million for the month. Online net receipts for the month totaled just over $17.6 million while retail receipts came to $3.1 million. As a result, sports wagering taxes collected by the state amounted to $1.3 million. This was an 18.1% increase on the previous month despite a lower overall handle.
Diamond Jo Dubuque retained its place as the Iowa sports betting retail market leader by accepting over $51.3 million in wagers during the month while Wild Rose Jefferson was next on the list with $34.1 million.
The IRGC also gave a breakdown of online sports betting activity revealing that the mobile market leader was Crown IA Gaming with over $69.8 million in wagers coming through its mobile sports betting apps. Betfair Interactive was the nearest competitor with an online handle of $50.4 million.
The latest figures brings the financial year-to-date total sports wagering handle to just over $1.1 billion.
