The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission has released its latest revenue reports revealing that the state’s licensed sportsbooks accepted $266.5 million in wagers throughout the month of December.
According to the latest figures, sportsbooks saw a drop of 7.3% in sports betting activity compared to the previous month when the state set a monthly record with over $287.6 million in wagers.
Mobile sports betting accounted for 90.7% of all sports wagers made during the month as online sports betting apps accepted over $241.7 million in wagers. Meanwhile retail sportsbooks took in just $24.8 million as in-person sports betting in the state continues to see figures drop since a bumper October saw them accept over $30.9 million in wagers.
Mobile sportsbooks paid out $229.8 million while retail payouts totaled $23.3 million for the month of December. As a result, online net receipts came to $11.86 million, a drop of 30% on the previous month. Retail receipts for the month amounted to $1.5 million. This resulted in state taxes of $957,637, a drop of 55% on the previous month’s tax yield.
The Isle Casino Hotel Waterloo was once again the market leader accepting over $46.9 million in wagers during the month. Of this figure, $46.9 million came through the casino’s mobile sports betting app. Diamond Jo Dubuque retained its place as the second most popular sportsbook with an overall sports betting handle of $36.9 million while the next of the list was the Wild Rose Jefferson with a handle of $31.6 million.
According to the report, the online sports betting market leader in Iowa was American Wagering Inc. who reported receiving $90 million in wagers through its mobile sports betting apps. Crown IA Gaming fell further behind its rival posting an online sports betting handle of $72.3 million for the month of December.
