2024 Sports Betting
Sports betting, while demonstrating high variability, also contributed significantly to Michigan’s gaming economy. Peaks in revenue were often tied to seasonal sports events, such as the Super Bowl, March Madness, and the start of the NFL season in September, which led to a notable $58.4 million in sports betting receipts that month. However, as the year concluded, sports betting receipts dipped.

Michigan’s iGaming and sports betting operators paid a total of $369.8 million in taxes and payments to the State of Michigan in 2024, a sharp increase from the $292.2 million in tax contributions during 2023. These funds were allocated to various public services, including education, infrastructure development, and regulatory oversight of the gaming industry.
Steady Monthly Growth and Performance
The year began on a strong note, with January gross receipts for iGaming reaching $181.9 million and online sports betting contributing an additional $47.7 million. Combined, these sectors generated $229.6 million in the first month of the year. February saw further growth in iGaming, with gross receipts rising to $188 million. However, sports betting receipts experienced a dip, dropping to $30.5 million, which brought the month’s total revenue to $218.5 million.
By March, iGaming revenues reached $215.15 million —setting the stage for consistent monthly increases. This was further complemented by sports betting receipts of $41.93 million, bringing total monthly receipts to $257.08 million. The trend continued through April, May, and June, with iGaming showing steady resilience, even during traditionally quieter months in the gaming calendar.
December capped the year with an all-time monthly high for iGaming revenues at $244 million. Although sports betting receipts declined to $20.2 million during this period, the combined total of $264.2 million still represented one of the year’s strongest months.
