The NCAA is pursuing another 13 gambling violations involving ex-college basketball players across six schools.

The announcement follows breaking news earlier this week that three players were slapped with lifetime bans for betting on their own games.

Two former Fresno State players, Mykell Robinson and Jalen Weaver alongside former San Jose State player Steven Vasquez had their NCAA eligibility permanently revoked.

The student athletics association is continuing to crack down on wagering by athletes in college sports and they believe they have found another 13 sports betting violations in basketball.

The NCAA released a statement on Thursday afternoon revealing its enforcement staff is processing alleged violations of gambling rules or failure-to-cooperate violations for 13 former men’s basketball players.

The players’ names weren’t released, but the six schools they represented were: Eastern Michigan, Temple, Arizona State, New Orleans, North Carolina A&T and Mississippi Valley State. None of the players are currently enrolled at their previous schools.

In January, New Orleans suspended four players for potential violations associated with sports betting and days later ESPN revealed a sports betting ring under federal investigation placed wagers against North Carolina A&T, Eastern Michigan and Mississippi Valley State.

Arizona State has quite the history with betting controversy – in 1997, Steven ‘Hedake’ Smith was arrested in connection with a point-shaving scandal, pleading guilty to accepting bribes to fix four games during the 1993-94 season.

Betting scandals have rocked the world of professional sports so far this year. In the NBA alone we’ve seen some very high-profile cases including regarding former Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley.

Beasley is under federal investigation focused on NBA games and prop bets, with sports betting apps reporting suspicious betting activity surrounding his prop markets from the start of January 2024.

A professional bettor placed 30 wagers in 46 minutes on Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier to win over $13,000, an investigation which is still ongoing and the player has not been cleared of any wrongdoing.
