The National Football League (NFL) has suspended Denver Broncos defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike for violating the league’s gambling policy.
An investigation revealed that the 25-year-old placed wagers on league games during his rookie season in 2022. As a result, Uwazurike has been banned for at least one year and can petition for reinstatement after 24th July, 2024.
Uwazurike is the ninth player to have been banned for breaching the league’s betting rules so far this year — five in April, three in the month of June and one in July.
In statement released following the decision, the Broncos said:
“Our organisation fully co-operated with this investigation and takes matters pertaining to the integrity of the game very seriously. The Denver Broncos will continue to provide all members of our organisation with the necessary education, resources and support to ensure compliance with the NFL’s gambling policy.”
Earlier this year, the Detroit Lions released Quintez Cephus, CJ Moore and Stanley Berryhill after they were banned following similar breaches in April. The Indianapolis Colts also released Isaiah Rodgers and Rashod Berry following their bans for the 2023 season. Meanwhile Tennessee Titans right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere was suspended for betting on other sports when at the team facility.
While approximately 4.2 billion people gamble at least once a year, pro-athletes are forbidden from gambling.
