According to a revenue report released by the Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC), Ohioans wagered almost $1.1 billion during January, the state’s first month of sports betting.

Sportsbooks generated revenues of $208.9 million for the month. The OCCC revealed that the majority of wagers were placed through mobile sports betting apps and platforms. All 16 mobile operators reported $205 million in revenue. However, when promotions and voided wagers are taken into account combined net revenues for the month came to -$114.3 million.

Ohio gamblers won a total of $883.6 million during the month.

Meanwhile, the state’s 14 retail sportsbooks combined to generate $3.2 million in revenues. The state’s four casinos also reported $86 million in revenues for the month of January.

News of a successful first month of sports betting comes after the OCCC announced that it would fine DraftKings for an alleged breach of gaming rules. The company sent out promotional emails to 2,500 people under the age of 21 ahead of the launch of sports betting in Ohio. Just a few weeks later, the commission took action against BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, and DraftKings for failing to use responsible gaming messaging in their marketing.

In February, Governor DeWine stated that he would support a 100% hike in sports betting taxes. Sports betting operators are currently taxed at 10%.
