Acme Fresh Market and Kroger are just two supermarket and grocery chains that have applied for a license to operate sports betting in their Ohio retail properties.
Ohio Sports betting to launch in Ohio on January 1st 2023
According to legislation signed into law in 2021, the supermarkets are just two of the many local businesses that are entitled to apply for sports betting licenses alongside bars, restaurants, and bowling alleys. House Bill 29 states that these types of businesses can apply to install sports betting kiosks and have been pre-approved by the Casino Control Commission.
A full list of over 1,100 pre-approved locations can be viewed here. The list will be updated each Friday by the Casino Control Commission.
Acme has been pre-approved for kiosk type C sports license for nine locations while Kroger has been pre-approved for 42 grocery stores across the state.
The majority of kiosks at all locations will be under the regulation of the Ohio Lottery Commission and must be recommended by the Lottery to the Casino Control Commission for license approval.
All properties must have a liquor permit to apply for a sports wagering license and must complete their application by August 15th.
So far, 28 bars have been pre-approved in Cleveland.
It’s not yet clear if the grocery stores will be able to pay out winnings on sports wagers but the Lottery is currently working with the Control Commission to ensure that any lottery retailer can cash winning wagers. Currently the limit on payouts for lottery winnings is $600.
