The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has released its latest monthly revenue report revealing that the first month of 2022 saw the state’s licensed sportsbooks set a new monthly record by accepting over $793.7 million in wagers.
The latest figures mark an increase of 5.77% on the previous month’s sports betting handle of $750.4 million. January was the first month since October that sports betting activity increased, a trend most likely affected by a rise in NFL betting ahead of the Super Bowl.
Mobile sports wagers once again accounted for the lion’s share of all wagers placed as PA online sportsbooks reported accepting $737.4 million in wagers throughout the month, another state record. This was just over $41 million more than reported in the previous month. Despite setting a new record for online bets, mobile revenue came in at just $47.6 million for the month, well short of the record of $76.2 million set in November of 2021.
Retail sportsbooks saw betting activity drop slightly from $57.1 million in December to $56.2 million in January. However, retail sports betting revenues jumped by $3 million to hit $5.7 million for the month.
Mobile and retail sports betting operators combined to generate taxable revenues of $32.1 million, up significantly from December’s figures but still short of the $63.6 million revenue record set in November 2021. This resulted in sports betting taxes of $10.9 million paid to the state.
Valley Forge Casino remains the out and out sports betting market leader as the operator reported a combined retail and mobile sports betting handle of $276.1 million.
