Return of the NFL Sees Pennsylvania Sports Betting Activity Jump by 66% in September

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has released its latest monthly revenue report revealing that the state’s sports betting operators accepted over $578.7 million in wagers throughout the month of September.

The latest figures mark a 66% increase on the previous month’s sports betting activity as operators reported the second highest amount of wagers received in 2021. The highest handle for the calendar year came in January when local gamblers placed over $615.2 million in wagers at both retail and online sportsbooks.

Mobile sports bets accounted for just over 91% of all bets made generating $40.9 million in revenue for PA online sportsbooks. Operators dished out $19.85 million in promotional credits throughout the month resulting in taxable gross revenue of just over $20 million, up from the $14.7 million recorded in the previous month.

Meanwhile retail sportsbooks bounced back from a poor summer as they reported accepting over $51.3 million throughout the month. This was an increase of 69% on the previous month. Combined taxable revenue for the month totaled $7,210,551.

Overall, sports betting generated $48.13 million in revenue up over 90% from the previous month’s total. Taxable revenue amounted to $28,253,790 resulting in state taxes of $9,606,289 and a local share assessment of $565,076.

Valley Forge Casino continues as the market leader with an overall handle of $187.5 million, up more than $50 million on the previous month. The casino’s online sportsbooks accounted for $183.6 million of total bets received while retail wagers amounted to $3.89 million. The operator’s closest rival for the month was once again Hollywood Casino at the Meadows with an overall handle of $166.6 million.
