PayPal has revealed that users in the UK and the United States will be given the option to stop online transactions to and from gambling websites and apps.
The payment provider has introduced blocking software into its UK and US platforms that allows users of online casinos and bookmakers the option to block transactions should they decide to self exclude from gambling.
The software prohibits transactions to and from any gambling entity that offer services or products including games of chance or skill that include an entry fee and a prize. All forms of casino gaming is covered by the software even allowing users to prohibit transactions to live, bricks and mortar casinos.
Users can also block payments to websites or apps that offer any kind of sports betting products or allows wagering on any event including horse racing and greyhound racing. This also includes all forms of person-to-person betting and lottery tickets or bingo style gaming.
The news of PayPal’s UK and US blocking option comes just a few days after payment provider Revolut announced that it would block all credit card payments to gambling websites in the Republic of Ireland. The move came after an investigation discovered that credit cards were being used to fund online gambling accounts through payment providers such as Revolut and PayPal.
In 2019, PayPal itself expressed concern that its service was being used to facilitate excessive online gambling activity. The new integration is a direct result of an internal review into such activity through PayPal.
