The National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) has released Fiscal Year 2022 (FY 2022) revenue report revealing that tribal gaming businesses combined to generate gross gaming revenues (GGR) of $40.9 billion.
The latest figure represent a 4.9% increase when compared to FY 2021’s figure of $39 billion. It was also the highest recorded revenue figure in history.
According to the report, seven of the NIGC’s eight regions reported a year-on-year increase in revenues. However, Chairperson E. Sequoyah Simermeyer and Vice Chair Jeannie Hovland noted that the disparity in revenue figures for individual regions can be affected by a variety of factors including closures, expansions, and new gaming operations. As such, the GGR figures should not be used as an indicator of the local economy of any specific region.
Phoenix reported the highest year-on-year increase of 15.7% while Sacramento was the only region to report a decrease. Yet despite a drop of 1.4% compared to FY 2021, Sacramento remained the outright leader with GGR of almost $11.8 billion. This accounted for 28.8% of all GGR for the year.

Speaking in Thackerville, Okla, Chairperson E. Sequoyah Simermeyer said:
“This year’s historic revenue reflects the resiliency of many tribal gaming operations, and how tribal gaming continues to rebound and remain strong. Tribal governments and the operations they license continue to explore new and innovative ways to expand and deliver world-class experiences to cultivate sustainable economies.
Across Indian country, tribes pursue economic sustainability through gaming by relying on the robust regulatory reputation for which Indian gaming is well known, and made better when supported by efficient and effective measures.”
Vice Chair Hovland added that the positive results for FY 2022 reflects Indian gaming geographic and financial diversity. She also noted that the success offered significant benefits to surrounding communities and regional economies.
“We have cause to celebrate the opportunity successful Indian gaming operations affords tribes to invest in the future and improve the quality of life for individual Native people, and their families, and their communities.”
The total GGR figures include 519 gaming operations owned by 244 federally recognized tribes across 29 states.
