According to the latest monthly revenue report from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, the state’s casinos and sports betting operators combined to generate $120.6 million in gross gaming revenue (GGR) throughout the month of August.
The latest figures represent a drop of just over 6% compared to July’s GGR of $128.41 million.
Casino revenue
The state’s three casinos; Plainridge Park Casino, MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor, reported combined GGR of $97.9 million for August. This was a drop of 1.11% compared to the $99 million reported in July.
Encore Boston Harbor was the market leader in all categories reporting monthly GGR of $61.3 million, showing a slight increase on the previous month’s total. This resulted in state taxes of $15.3 million or 55.4% of all casino gaming taxes for the month of August.
Meanwhile, MGM reported GGR of $23.5 million, the same figure as the previous month. This resulted in $5.8 million in casino gaming taxes from the operator for the second month in a row. Plainridge reported just over $13 million from its slots only facility, a 5.8% drop on the previous month’s total. This resulted in taxes of $6.4 million due to its tax rate of 49%.
Overall, the state collected $27.6 million in taxes from casino gaming and $35,356 from retail sports betting at the casinos. This brings the total collected from casinos during August to just over $27.6 million. As a result, the state has now collected over $1.514 billion in taxes from casinos alone since the industry launched.
Sports Wagering Revenue
According to the report the state’s retail and mobile sports betting operators combined to generate $22.7 million in taxable sports wagering revenue (TSWR) during August. This was a drop of 22.8% month-on-month.

Since the launch of mobile sports betting in Massachusetts during March, the state has now collected $50.3 million in taxes.
