Mobile Sports Betting Pushes Massachusetts Gaming Revenue to over $152 Million in March

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has released it latest monthly revenue report revealing that the state’s licensed casinos and mobile sportsbooks generated combined gross gaming revenues (GGR) of $152.6 million during March.

Casino revenue

Plainridge Park Casino, MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor combined to generate $104 million in GGR throughout the month. Encore Boston Harbor was the market leader in all categories reporting monthly GGR of $66.2 million resulting in taxes of $16.5 million for the state. MGM reported GGR of $24 million resulting in just over $6 million in taxes while Plainridge reported $14.2 million from its slots only facility. This resulted in taxes of $6.9 million due to its tax rate of 49%.

Overall, the state collected $29.5 million in taxes from casino gaming and $218,295 from retail sports betting at the casinos. This brings the total collected from casinos during March to $29.7 million and means that the state has now collected over $1.3 billion in taxes since casinos first opened in Massachusetts.

Sports Wagering Revenue

During March there were three retail sportsbooks open at:

  • Plainridge Park Casino
  • Encore Boston Harbor
  • MGM Springfield

There were also six licensed mobile sports betting operators active during the state’s first month of online sports wagering. These were:

  • Barstool Sportsbook
  • BetMGM
  • Caesars Sportsbook
  • DraftKings
  • FanDuel
  • WynnBet

Following the launch of mobile sports betting in Massachusetts during March, mobile license holders alongside the state’s three retail sports betting outlets generated $47.06 million in taxable sports wagering revenue (TSWR).

Throughout the month sports betting operators took in over $569 million in wagers with $548 million coming through online sportsbooks. Encore Boston Harbor was the retail market leader with over $19 million in wagers while DraftKings led the online market accepting over $257.6 million in wagers through its mobile sportsbook.

Taxable revenue from retail sports betting came to $1.4 million while the figure for mobile sports betting was $45.6 million. Overall the state collected $9.3 million in taxes from sports betting.
