New Jersey Gambling Revenue for 2022 Matches All-Time High

The latest monthly revenue report from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement has revealed that combined gambling revenues for the month of December came to $454 million bringing the total revenue generated in 2022 to $5.2 billion.

December’s figures represent an increase of 12.5% compared to December 2021 while the yearly total marks a 10% increase on the previous year. 2022 was the first time that revenues hit $5.2 billion since the record was set in 2006.

Casino win

According to the report, roughly half of year’s total revenue was generated by in-person casino gambling and sports betting. 2022 also saw the Atlantic City casino industry finally surpass pre-pandemic levels of in-person winnings from gamblers in 2022, with $2.78 billion in winnings from in-person gamblers compared to $2.68 billion in 2019. However, only three of the nine casinos (Borgata, Ocean and Resorts) generated more revenue from in-person gambling in 2022 than they did in 2019.

Six NJ casinos had more total gambling revenue in 2022 than they did in the previous year:

Borgata – $1.3 billion – up 18.2%

Golden Nugget – $581 million – up 10.2%

Hard Rock – $576 million – up 12.7%

Ocean – $389 million – up 13.6%

Tropicana – $365 million – up 2.9%

Bally’s – $198 million – up 37.3%.

Harrah’s – $258 million – down 3.4%

Caesars – $239 million – down 1%

Resorts – $168 million – down 0.3%

Online gaming

In December 2022, the revenue generated by internet gaming, as reported by casinos and their partners, was $151.5 million, an increase of 13.7% compared to the previous month’s revenue of $133.2 million. As a result, the year-to-date internet gaming revenue total was $1.66 billion, a growth of 21.6% from the same period the previous year, when online operators reported $1.37 billion in revenue.

For the year, online leader Resorts Digital, won $546 million, an increase of 21.3% year-on-year. Its closest competitor Caesars Interactive NJ won $113 million, an increase of just 1% on 2021’s figures.

Sports betting

New Jersey sports betting grew by 48.5% month-on-month with $87.7 million in revenue reported. However, for the year-to-date period, the revenue generated from sports betting was $763.0 million, a decrease of 6.5% from the $815.8 million reported for 2021.
