Quiet Start to 2022 Sees Maryland Casino Revenue Drop in January

The latest revenue report from the Maryland State Lottery and Gaming Control Commission (MLGCC) has revealed that the state’s six licensed casinos generated $153.8 million in revenue for the month of January.

This marks a drop of 11.04% in revenue from the previous month’s reported figure of $172.9 million. Gambling revenue for January increased by 19.4% year-on-year, however, the report does note that in early 2021, casinos across the state were operating at reduced capacity.

The state collected over $62.4 million, a drop of 13.78% on the contributions made during the previous month. Of that figure, $45.5 million went directly to the Education Trust Fund (ETF), $6.2 million less than in December.

The monthly report once again gives a detailed breakdown of revenues posted by each of the state’s six casinos:

  • MGM National Harbor — $67,090,648 up 32.8% from January 2021
  • Live! Casino & Hotel — $54,631,052 up 14.4% from January 2021
  • Horseshoe Casino — $16,112,570 up 17.1% from January 2021
  • Hollywood Casino — $6,651,783 down 2.8% from January 2021
  • Ocean Downs Casino — $4,967,726 down 12.3% from January 2021
  • Rocky Gap Casino — $4,300,336 up 1.8% from January 2021

Sports betting revenue figures for December

Sports betting launched in Maryland on Thursday December 9th. 5 retail sportsbooks launched during the month while a mobile sports betting launch date has yet to be finalized.

According to the MLGCC, Sports betting operators reported accepting  over $16.5 million in wagers during December. This figure included promotional wagers given to players by sportsbooks. Combined player winnings for the month amounted to $13.3 million resulting in a 19.1% hold for operators. Taxable revenue for the month totaled $3.1 million allowing the state to collect $469,297 in sports wagering taxes.
